Compliance Certificate Versus Defect Notice

A gas compliance certificate is the licence holder's written confirmation that a completed gas system installation or alteration is compliant, given to the owner immediately on completion. It records the job as done and lawful. Only a licensed gasfitter may carry out gas work in Queensland, and that includes testing and certifying the system, its pipework and every connection.

A defect notice is the opposite paperwork. Where a gasfitter sees a safety problem in the system in front of them, the owner gets a defect notice spelling out the fault. No notice is needed where the concern gets fixed on the spot during the same visit.

One document clears a finished job. The other flags a fault that needs sorting before the system can be called safe, and our gas leak repairs page covers what happens next.

How the Certificate Reaches You

The licence holder who did the work issues the original to the owner through the state's online portal once the installation is complete. Where fuel gas arrives via a distribution system or network, its operator also receives a copy, sent within 5 days. You never chase the paperwork; the gasfitter lodges it and your copy arrives electronically.

The physical plate is mostly history. Plate requirements changed in July 2025, and most installations no longer need any plate at all, since the portal record does that job instead.

Checks a Certificate Does Not Replace

A certificate records one event, the finished installation or alteration, and Queensland's gas safety advice is that appliances also be given a periodic service by a licensed gasfitter. The paper says the job was right on the day. It does not promise the system stays that way.

Between gas jobs, the owner's part is visual only:

  • Watch appliances and any visible pipe for damage, corrosion or general deterioration.
  • Store nothing flammable near an appliance.
  • Secure cylinders away from heat, with the valve shut when idle, even on an empty cylinder.

Tenanted homes add a second layer. Queensland's tenancy Act treats a gas leak, the gas supply failing, and an appliance for hot water, cooking or heating breaking down as emergency repairs. The same rules put the owner or manager in charge of handing over premises in good repair and keeping them that way.

Caboolture has plenty of rentals and long-held homes. At the last census, 20.8 per cent of local dwellings were owned outright and 33.7 per cent carried a mortgage. Plenty of that stock dates from the 1960s through the 1980s, so ageing fittings turn up regularly between tenancies.

A fresh cooktop install on our gas cooktop page is one job that ends in new certification.

Where to Ask for a Copy

  1. 1

    Check the Records You Kept

Invoices, quotes and emails from the original installation often hold the details you need. A semi-rural place out along Old Toorbul Point Road may go years between gas jobs, so older files are worth a look.

  2. 2

Ask the Gasfitter Who Did the Work

The licence holder who signed off the installation can confirm what was lodged and when. A weatherboard home near the Hasking Street civic precinct might have paper going back decades, and we can talk you through the record for your property.

  3. 3

    Search the State's Online System

The state keeps gas compliance certificates in an online system that searches by property address. Homes fitted with an older physical plate can still check the plate, though most jobs since July 2025 have no plate to find.

Gas Certificate Questions Answered

Call (07) 3520 4094

Who can issue a gas certificate in QLD?

Only a licensed gasfitter can. Testing and certifying a gas system, its pipework and its connections all count as gas work here, so ask to sight their gas work licence before any gas work starts.

Who gets a copy of the gas compliance certificate?

The owner receives the original via the state's portal, and where a fuel gas network supplies the property, its operator also receives a copy within 5 days. Your copy arrives electronically rather than by post.

Do gas compliance plates still need to be fitted in Caboolture?

No, the plate rules changed in July 2025, and most installations are now covered without any physical plate. The certificate itself still reaches the owner once the installation is complete.

How long does a gas compliance certificate last?

No expiry applies, because it records one event: the installation or alteration at completion. How the system holds up afterwards depends on servicing, and the Government's advice is periodic inspection by a licensed gasfitter.

What does a gas certificate cost in Caboolture?

The price hinges on the size of the installation or alteration behind the certificate, plus the supply testing it calls for. A fixed quote before any work starts sets the figure, with $0 call-out fees.
